Hudson Valley Wins Series Opener In Extras Over Lowell

Lowell, MA (8/30/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Lowell Spinners by a score of 10-5 in 11 innings on Sunday evening at LeLacheur Park. With the result, the Renegades saw their record improve to 35-32 while Lowell fell to 34-34.

After two scoreless innings, Hudson Valley struck for three runs in the top of the third inning. With two outs, left fielder Joe McCarthy was hit by a pitch and moved to second after a walk to shortstop Michael Russell. With designated hitter Alex Schmidt batting, McCarthy stole third base and scored on a throwing error by Lowell's catcher Jhon Nunez. Schmidt then hit a two-run home run over the right-center field wall to give the Renegades a 3-0 lead.

Lowell cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run home run from left fielder Tyler Spoon. The Renegades answered in the top of the fourth inning as second baseman Oscar Sanay drove in center fielder Angel Moreno, who doubled to lead off the inning, on a RBI sacrifice fly to give Hudson Valley a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lowell scored a run as Nunez came across the plate on a wild pitch to bring the score to 4-3 in favor of Hudson Valley. But the Renegades restored their two-run advantage at 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning as catcher Danny De La Calle doubled and scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Lowell scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as with two outs, right fielder Trent Kemp reached first base on a wild pitch after striking out. Shortstop Jeremy Rivera singled to move Kemp to second base and both runners scored on a two-run double from Spoon, tying the score at 5-5.

Extra innings were needed as neither team scored in the eighth or the ninth inning. After a scoreless 10th inning, the Renegades scored five runs in the top of the 11th as Sanay led off the inning with a single and moved to third base on a single by McCarthy. Russell brought Sanay home on a RBI double to give Hudson Valley a 6-5 lead. After Schmidt was intentionally walked to load the bases, Moreno hit a two-run double and Schmidt scored later in the inning as right fielder Jose Paez reached on a fielder's choice. Third baseman Joseph Astacio grounded into a force out that allowed Moreno to score to give the Renegades a 10-5 advantage

The win went to Hudson Valley's Justin McCalvin (3-1) as he tossed two shutout innings in relief and struck out one batter. Michael Velasquez started for the Renegades and in five innings of work, he struck out five batters and allowed three runs and two earned runs. Lowell's Enfember Martinez (3-3) took the loss as he allowed five runs and three-earned runs in two innings pitched.

Notes: Oscar Sanay has been a steady contributor in the Hudson Valley Renegades lineup over the past few games as he extended his hitting streak to five straight games with a two-for-four with a RBI effort on Sunday night. During that stretch, Sanay is hitting .555 (10-18) with three RBI and five runs scored along with four multi-hit games.

The Renegades continue their three-game series at Lowell on Monday, August 31st with first pitch set for 7:05pm. Hudson Valley returns to Dutchess Stadium to host the Aberdeen IronBirds on Saturday, September 5th at 7:05pm with a fireworks show to follow the game.
