Lake Monsters Open Series At Aberdeen With 9-5 Loss

ABERDEEN, MD --- The Aberdeen Ironbirds used a five-run fourth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit and went on to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 9-5 in the opener of a three-game New York-Penn League series at Ripken Stadium on Sunday night.

Vermont had built the 3-1 lead on a Jesus Lopez RBI single in the second inning and a Chris Iriart two-run single in the third, but the Ironbirds tied the game in the fourth on back-to-back bases loaded RBI singles from Ryan Mountcastle and Austin Pfeiffer. A Mike Odenwaelder sacrifice fly gave Aberdeen the lead before Cedric Mullins capped off the five-run inning with a two-run double for the 6-3 lead.

The Ironbirds added two more runs in the on a Alex Murphy RBI double and Mountcastle RBI single off Vermont starter Angel Duno (0-3), who was charged with eight runs on 11 hits (most by Lake Monsters pitcher since 2010) over five innings to take the loss. Randolph Gassaway added an RBI single in the sixth off Vermont reliever Cody Kurz for a 9-3 lead before the Lake Monsters got an Iriart RBI single in eighth and Steven Pallares RBI groundout in ninth.

Mullins was 3-for-5 with two runs, a double, triple and two RBI to lead Aberdeen (35-33), while Gassaway was 3-for-5 and starting pitcher Cristian Alvarado allowed three runs on five hits over five innings to earn the victory. Seth Brown was 3-for-4 with two runs and his 17th double of the season to extend his hitting streak to five straight (10-for-21) for the Lake Monsters, while Iriart was 2-for-4 with three RBI (his 41 RBI overall are most for Vermont player since 2008).

The Lake Monsters are now 3-10 in their last 13 contests, allowing five or more runs in 12 of the 13 games (1-0 shutout win in first game of doubleheader at Connecticut August 23rd only game with less than 5 runs allowed). Vermont (28-38) has also lost nine of its last 10 road games after starting the season 10-11 on the road.

The Lake Monsters and Ironbirds will play 7:05 pm games on Monday and Tuesday at Aberdeen before Vermont returns to historic Centennial Field for its final four home games of the season beginning with a doubleheader against the Hudson Valley Renegades on Wednesday beginning at 7:05 pm.
