Carroll sets CHL record with shutout win
December 14, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Ken Carroll became the CHL's All-Time leader in career shutouts as Bossier-Shreveport defeated Colorado 3-0 Friday night at CenturyTel Center . The win was Carroll's 23rd career CHL shutout, which surpassed Rod Branch for 1st place in league history.
Carroll stopped all 34 Eagles shots in the game to earn the historic shutout. On the other end of the ice, the Mudbugs got goals from Justin Aikins, Elias Godoy and Brett Smith as Bossier-Shreveport won its eighth consecutive game at CenturyTel Center .
The game was scoreless after one period of play, but there was still plenty of action in the opening frame. The âBugs had 19 shots in the period, but went 0 for 2 on the powerplay. Late in the first, Colorado had 1:18 of 5-on-3 powerplay time after consecutive Mudbug penalties, but Bossier-Shreveport killed off the penalties to keep the game scoreless.
Early in the second period, that changed on a heads up play by Justin Aikins. After the Eagles had gained possession of the puck in their own zone, they looked to start a breakout when Justin Aikins stole it from Riley Nelson and put in his sixth goal of the season off the post and behind goaltender Ian Keserich. The goal extended Aikins' point streak to six games and gave the âBugs a 1-0 lead after two periods.
In the third period, a highlight-reel play by Elias Godoy gave the Mudbugs some breathing room. As Colorado tried to clear the puck up the boards, Godoy intercepted it and then stickhandled around three separate Eagles defenders before roofing the puck between Keserich's shoulder and the crossbar to put the Mudbugs up by two goals. Carroll made a handful of big saves later in the third to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard, and Brett Smith's empty net goal with 25 seconds left did the rest as Bossier-Shreveport finished off the 3-0 victory.
The record-setting shutout was Carroll's fourth win of the season, moving his record above .500 at 4-3-1. The Mudbugs outshot the Eagles 39-34 in the contest, with both teams going 0 for 5 on the powerplay.
The Mudbugs will now hit the road to take on the Tulsa Oilers for the third time this season tomorrow night at the Tulsa Convention Center . Puck drop is set for 7:35 as the Mudbugs try to go 3-0 this year against the Oilers. Tune in to catch the action on News radio 710 AM KEEL with the pre-game show starting up at 7:15 pm.
