Bucks beat Rayz 5-2: Hiebert scores twice

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 5-2Friday night in front of 3,522 fans at the American Bank Center. The win was the Bucks second straight as they improve their CHL-leading point total to 38 (18-6-2). Laredo also snapped a two-game losing streak against the Rayz.

James Hiebert scored two goals, including an empty net tally to lead the Bucks.

The Rayz took a 1-0 lead just 3:28 into the game, as Jon Jankus sent a shot in off of the rebound from an odd angle from the right corner past Bucks goaltender Kevin Beech.

The Bucks could not take advantage of two first period power-plays, going 0-for-two with the man advantage.

Laredo (8-3-2 on the road) outshot Corpus Christi in the period 18-6, with Beech stopping five of six Rayz shots, and Jason Tapp setting aside all 18 Bucks shots.

Laredo came out on fire and scored three second period goals to take a 3-1 lead.

The Bucks tied the game up at the 5:53 mark of the second period when Brent MacSween scored his 11th goal of the season with David Victor and Andew Desjardins picking up assists.

The Bucks took a 2-1 lead at the 13:49 mark when Chris Korchinski scored off of a wrap around goal from the right crease past Tapp. It was Korchinski's 11th goal of the season. Rane Carnegie and Jeff Genovy picked up the assists.

The Bucks increased their lead to 3-1 with just 1:28 left in the period when Hiebert sent in a shot from the right circle past Tapp. It was Hieberts 11th goal of the season, with Jeff Bes and Serge Dube picking up assists.

Laredo outshot Corpus Christi 13-9 in the second period.

The Bucks extended their lead to 4-1 just 1:32 into the third when Genovy sent a back-hander off the rebound past Tapp. The Rayz pulled Tapp after Genovy's goal.

Corpus pulled to within 4-2 at the 8:19 mark when Chris Shaffer scored off of a rebound past Beech.

Hiebert finished off the scoring with an empty net tally with 1:35 left in the game. It was Hiebert's second goal of the game and 12th of the year.

Beech picked up the win in net stopping 23 of 25 Rayz shots to improve to 7-1-1 on the season, while Tapp suffered the loss setting aside 28 of 32 Bucks shots he faced.

After tonight's game the Bucks are off until next Thursday when they will travel to face the Odessa Jackalopes, before hosting Austin next Friday and Saturday.
