
Scorpions Grab Point With Overtime Loss

[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The Amarillo Gorillas came into the Santa Ana Star Center and grabbed a road victory with a 5-4 overtime win. It was the first time this season New Mexico lost to their division rival.
It was the second road victory in a row for the Gorillas and it took two, two-goal comebacks to earn their second straight victory away from home. David Nimmo finished off his three point night with the overtime winner.
The Scorpions were off and running early in the first period. Konrad Reeder scored his league leading fourth shorthanded goal at the 4:36 mark. New Mexico increased their lead when David Simoes delivered a perfect pass off the boards to Ross McCain. McCain sped towards the net and slid a backhand shot through the legs of goalie Dan Bauer.
The tide turned in the second half of the first period and Amarillo came to life. Nate Fornataro cut the lead in half with a power play goal at the 16:33 mark of the opening period. With only nine seconds remaining, the Gorillas used a two-on-one break to tie the game when Austin Sutter scored.
The second period almost mirrored the first. Craig Macdonald put the Scorpions back ahead at the 3:23 mark with his 10th goal of season. Shawn Skiehar added to the lead when he tipped in a McCain shot for his second goal of the season.
Amarillo cut the lead in half with another late period goal. Chris Martini won a draw back to Bill Vandermeer who shot it over Mike Minard and into the net.
The Gorillas tied the game for a second time with another power play goal. Sutter pushed a rebound to the back of the net at the 3:11 mark of the third period.
Fans can get ready for the annual "Salute to the Military Night" on Saturday, December 15th when the Scorps host Rio Grande Valley. New Mexico will wear special themed jerseys to be auctioned off after the game, with part of the proceeds benefiting the Blue Star Mothers New Mexico Chapters. It is also "Teddy Bear Toss Night." Fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to the game and throw them on the ice following the first Scorps goal. They will all be collected at donated to needy children during the holiday season.
