Carolina Mudcats News Release
Chattanooga, TN --- Miguel Rojas hit a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning as Carolina outlasted Chattanooga 12-11 in the fourth longest game in Mudcats history on Thursday night at AT&T Field.
Neftali Soto tripled off the bench to start the 12th, with Rojas slicing a flyball to right to bring him home, lifting Carolina to within seven of first-place Chattanooga with 17 to play. Rojas' game-winner ended the 4-hour, 52-minute enduring contest.
The game featured an inside the park home run, two five-hit performances, including the Southern League's first cycle since 2008, and a Mudcats' escape from a bases loaded, none-out jam in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Carolina held leads of 5-0 and 9-5, and lost an 11-8 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning when Alex Castellanos doubled in the tying run with two outs and two strikes.
Alfredo Silverio and Scott Van Slyke each had five hits, with Silverio doubling in the 11th inning to achieve the cycle.
Carolina's Henry Rodriguez drove in four runs to lead an 18-hit attack. Chattanooga drilled out 21 hits and stranded 16 baserunners.
In the bottom of the 11th, reliever Brandon Hynick (W, 3-3) saw the Lookouts load the bases with no outs, only to induce a grounder to short to force out Elian Herrera at home plate. The Lookouts were forced to pinch-hit pitcher Allen Webster because they were out of bench players. Webster proceeded to ground to Rojas at third base, who threw home for a force out and Webster was doubled up at first to end the inning.
Donnie Joseph (S, 6) entered to pitch the 12th a day after suffering the loss on Wednesday afternoon. Van Slyke doubled to start the inning, and was at third base with one out, but on a pitch to the backstop by Joseph, Van Slyke hesitated badly before breaking for home and was tagged out by Joseph.
The series continues Friday night with Pedro Villarreal starting against Allen Webster at 7:15 PM ET.
