Shafer Pitches M-Braves to Victory

PEARL, MS-Aaron Shafer worked eight strong innings for the M-Braves as they shutout Huntsville 3-0 at Trustmark Park to claim the series against the Stars. With the shutout victory, the M-Braves move to 6-6 on the season in shutouts.

The M-Braves (25-29, 50-74) plated three runs on nine hits while Huntsville (22-31, 59-63) gathered just seven hits on the night. Neither team made an error in the contest, thus extending the M-Braves errorless streak to three games.

Shafer (2-2) limited Huntsville to just five hits and three walks while striking out six. Benino Pruneda (S, 9) came in to work the ninth and notch the save, giving up two hits while fanning two.

Dan Merklinger (7-8) went six innings for the Stars, giving up two earned runs on six hits and four walks while fanning five batters.

Antoan Richardson walked and Mycal Jones singled to lead off the bottom of the third. Dan Nelson followed with an RBI single to right field, plating Richardson and giving the M-Braves a 1-0 lead. Jones took third on the play before coming in to score on an Ed Lucas sac fly, extending the Braves' lead to 2-0.

Nelson and Lucas both reached on singles in the bottom of the eighth. Sean Henry then delivered a single to left field, plating Nelson and making it a 3-0 game.

In Saturday night's series finale, the M-Braves send lefty Jose Lugo (0-4, 3.88) to the hill where he'll square off against Stars' right-hander Jesus Sanchez (3-5, 4.82). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM. Gates open at 5:00 PM.
