Franklin Shines in Return, But Generals Fall to Smokies

JACKSON, TENN. - The Smokies gave the Jackson Generals their fifth straight loss Friday night at Pringles Park, 3-2. Nick Franklin, in his first game since June 27th was 3-for-4, with a triple, RBI and run scored. Franklin missed 48 games on the disabled list. He is the #3 prospect for the Mariners, according to Baseball America. The Smokies have won all four games in the current series and look for the sweep on Saturday. The five game skid tied for the longest losing streak of the season.

Vinnie Catricala was 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI Friday, notching his 21st multi-hit game of the season. The Generals lost despite out-hitting the Smokies 8-7, stranding eight runners on base and hitting into four double plays.

Starter Steven Hensley logged his second straight quality start, but again does not get a win. Hensley (3-7) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Hensley struck out six and walked two. Trey McNutt (3-5) was the winner for Tennessee and surrendered just two runs in seven innings. Marcus Hatley saved his fourth game for the Smokies.

Nick Franklin smacked a one out double and then scored on a base hit by Vinnie Catricala in the bottom of the first inning. The Generals jumped out to a 1-0 advantage.

After holding the Smokies scoreless the first six frames, Tennessee scored three in the top of the seventh inning to lead 3-1. The Smokies plated two on a two-run homer from Nelson Perez and another on a double from Junior Lake.

Franklin singled in Gabriel Noriega in the bottom of the seventh inning to trim the lead to 3-2, but that would be as close as the Generals would get. Vinnie Catricala tripled to start the bottom of the eighth, but was left stranded.

The Generals, wrap up their five-game series with Tennessee at Pringles Park Saturday night. Game time is set for 6:05 pm. Saturday is National Guard Night and there will also be a Postgame Fireworks Extravaganza, presented by WBBJ ABC 7. The Dale Earnhardt Jr. #88 National Guard Car will be on display at Pringles Park. RHP Yoervis Medina (0-0, 0.00) makes the start for the Generals against RHP Larry Suarez (0-1, 4.40) for the Smokies.
