Carl Clips Canaries, Fish Win Series
August 12, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes starter Edwin Carl pitched a brilliant three-hit shutout on Wednesday night. Reggie Abercrombie threw in a two-run homer.
That's pretty much all the Goldeyes needed.
With a crowd of 6,056 at Shaw Park cheering every pitch Carl threw in the eighth and ninth innings, the Goldeyes beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 3-0 to win their second straight game and lock up a series win over the visitors from South Dakota. The game took only one hour and 57 minutes to complete.
"I threw strikes with the fastball," said Carl with a smile. "I had command all night. I felt going out there and we had a great crowd, I love pitching in front of a big crowd."
With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 35-40 on the season - 16-19 at home. With two straight wins, the Goldeyes have pulled back to within 6 ½ games of the leader, the Joplin Blasters in the wild card race.
While Carl had the Canaries under control, the offence got him all the runs he needed in the third. Ryan Babineau singled and went to second on a passed ball. With two out, Adam Heisler singled, scoring Babineau from second and then Heisler came around to score when Reggie Abercrombie drilled a long home run over the left-centre field fence, 400-feet from home plate.
"He threw me a fastball middle-in," said Abercrombie. "(Miguel) Pena is a good pitcher, but he gave me a real nice pitch to hit."
That was it for the Goldeyes offence, but Carl just seemed to get better as the game went on. He allowed only three scattered hits and struck out nine. It was the first complete game shutout of his professional career.
The Goldeyes finished with three runs on six hits, as Abercrombie had his second big night in a row. He homered, scored a run and drove in two. Casey Haerther had a pair of hits in three trips.
Carl (2-0, 2.49 ERA) had his second superb start at home and earned the victory, while Sioux Falls starter Pena (6-6, 3.16 ERA) suffered the loss. Both pitchers went the distance.
The Goldeyes and Canaries will play the final of this three-game series on Thursday afternoon at Noon at Shaw Park. Left-hander Nick Hernandez (8-5, 2.49 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while right-hander Stephen Bougher (3-4, 4.38 ERA) will take to the mound for Sioux Falls.
