Sioux City Explorers News Release

The Sioux City Explorers looked like champions Tuesday evening, plating eight runs against the best team in the American Association, going on to win 8-3 over the St. Paul Saints. Sioux City has won fourteen consecutive games and is now only one win away from matching the American Association record for consecutive wins without a loss.

St. Paul plated the first run of the game quickly in the first inning. Saints centerfielder Alonzo Harris led-off the top half with a single, advanced to second on a stolen base and scored off an RBI double hit by Angelo Songco to take the quick 1-0 lead.

Explorers matched the Saints run and then some, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead 4-1. X's second baseman Ryan Court homered with a man on for the first two runs in the inning. Later in that inning, Tim Colwell knocked in Tommy Mendonca from second base with a base-hit, and later scored himself on an error by the shortstop.

In the fifth inning, St. Paul managed to cut the lead to one, scoring two runs in the inning. Mike Kvansnicka knocked in the first with a base-hit single scoring the run from third, and a wild pitch scored another later in the inning.

In the sixth inning, Tim Colwell singled, moved to second on an error by the catcher, stole third and scored off a Brent Keys single to extend the lead 5-3 after six innings of play.

Sioux City went on to add three huge runs in the eighth inning and go on to win the first of three vs St. Paul by a score of 8-3 at Lewis and Clark Park. X's centerfielder Matty Johnson knocked in Matt Koch and Tim Colwell with a two run single, and later scored from third off a sac-fly RBI by Rene Tosoni.

Explorers starter Eric Wordekemper (4-2) got the no decision allowing three runs in 4.1 innings. X's right-hander Rob Wort (8-3) pitched in relief getting the win, giving up no runs in 2.2 innings pitched.

Saints starter Dustin Crenshaw (12-2) was charged with the loss giving up five runs (four earned) in six innings. Chris Peacock (2-1) pitched the final two innings out of the bullpen for St. Paul, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks.

Sioux City had three players finish with three hits or more in the contest. X's right-fielder Brent Keys went 3 for 5 with an RBI. Second baseman Ryan Court had three hits along with a two run home run in the second inning, and Tim Colwell had himself a 4 for 4 night at the plate with a run scored, a stolen base and an RBI.
