Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Fargo, ND August 11, 2015- For the fourth time in seven days the Gary South Shore RailCats found themselves playing extra innings. For the third time in the past week the RailCats went down in extra innings 5-4 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Tuesday night in Fargo.
The RailCats and RedHawks were tied at two after 10 and were forced to play the international extra innings rule. The teams begin play in the 11th with a runner at second and no outs. The RailCats could not get a bunt down to move JD Pulfer to third and would not score. Fargo-Moorhead did get a bunt down but it forced out a runner at third and Andy Loomis struck out a pair to keep the RedHawks off the board.
They went to the 12th still knotted at two. With Jose Sermo running at second Adam Taylor hit a homerun down the right field line that just stayed fair to give Gary a 4-2 lead off Mike Nesseth. That two run lead looked like it might be enough to win the opener.
In the bottom of the 12th facing rookie Matt Solter Zach Penprase just beat out a throw on an infield single to put runners at first and third. The RailCats brought in lefty Shawn O'Neill to face former RailCat Drew Muren. He would bring home Ryan Pineda from third with an RBI single making it 4-3 with runners at first and second.
O'Neill then would strike out Chad Mozingo but Penprase stole third as the RailCats defense was trying to play for a bunt with Michael Wing at the plate. Wing hit a sac fly to right to bring home Penprase and the game was tied.
The South Shore needed to get one more out to go another inning but Muren stole second then came home on and RBI single from Joe Dunigan. Dungian, who is the league leader in strike outs at 103 won the battle with O'Neill to send the RedHawks into a frenzied walk off celebration.
The RailCats lost despite getting a homerun from Brennan Metzger and 5.2 innings of scoreless relief from Andy Roberts. The lefty, who was resigned before the game, held the RedHawks to three hits with a walk and five strike outs.
The two teams will play game two of the series Wednesday night 7:02 pm at Newman Outdoor Stadium. The RailCats will send out LHP Chuck Fontana (3-2, 2.77) to face fellow LHP Brandon Mann (3-4, 4.72).
