
Wingnuts Pitching Staff Grows with Addition of Two Right-Handers

WICHITA, KS (August 12, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts added both a quality starter and a late-inning reliever to their roster on Wednesday afternoon. RHP Paul Smyth and RHP Jon Link join Wichita in time for their 7:05 p.m. meeting with the Grand Prairie AirHogs while infielder Luis Hernandez and RHP Scott Kuzminsky were moved to the disabled list.
Smyth, 28 years of age, began this season by making 28 appearances with the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League. In his time on the East Coast, he recorded one save and went 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA. He struck out 23 and walked 11 opposing hitters.
Smyth had spent his entire career, before joining Somerset, in the Oakland A's organization, including two seasons at the Triple-A level. He appeared in a total of 78 games for the A's top affiliate in Sacramento. He posted a 5-2 record and ERA of 2.82 with 87 strikeouts.
In his seven-year minor league career, the native of Templeton, California has put together a 22-13 record, a 3.18 ERA, 44 saves, and 384 strikeouts in 399.0 innings pitched in 286 games. He averages nearly nine strikeouts per nine innings pitched.
In five appearances with the Wingnuts this season, all starts, Link is 4-0 with a miniscule 1.87 earned run average. He has struck out almost one batter per inning over 24.1 frames. He has missed the last two weeks with a forearm strain.
Hernandez, a five-year MLB infielder with the New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals, was playing every day at shortstop. He currently has a batting average of .255 and had driven in five runs over the last two nights. Kuzminsky has moved alternated this season between starting and relieving. In 19 appearances, 13 out of the bullpen, he is 2-4 with a 4.78 ERA. His last outing came on Monday against Joplin.
