Blasters Win Streak Ends in Home Loss to Rockland

Joplin, MO-The Blasters five-game winning streak came to end with a 4-3 loss to the Rockland Boulders Tuesday night at Joe Becker Stadium.

Joplin (41-32) dropped two games behind first-place Wichita in the South, but still leads the wild-card race by a half-game over Kansas City. The Wingnuts and T-Bones both posted victories Tuesday.

In the first game ever against a Can-Am League opponent, the Blasters opened the scoring in the second. Omar Luna reached base with a two-out single to right. After Luna stole second, Mitch Glasser walked. Jesus Solorzano then drove in Luna on a line drive single to left.

Rockland (46-26) took the lead for good with a two-out rally in the third. Junior Arrojo singled to center and later stole second. Stephen Cardullo walked. The next batter, Joe Maloney, doubled up the right field line and scored both base runners for a 2-1 advantage.

The Boulders added to their lead with another two-spot in the fifth. Stefen Henderson led off the inning with a single to left. With one out, Arrojo tapped back to the pitcher. A wild throw into center field moved Henderson to third. Arrojo then stole second. Cardullo followed with a weak ground ball up the third base line that was fielded by the pitcher. The throw came home and hit Henderson as he slid across the plate. The ball richocheted behind home and allowed Arrojo to score as well for a 4-1 cushion. Joplin plated single runs in the fifth and sixth innings but drew no closer.

Fray Martinez posted the win on the mound for Rockland. Martinez (3-0) worked five innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Reyes Dorado took the loss for Joplin. Dorado (1-1) lasted four-and-a-third and allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Dorado had the two throwing errors in the fifth that proved costly. Boulders closer Luis Sanz earned his 13th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth that included two strikeouts.

At the plate, Joplin outhit Rockland 8-to-4 but left 10 men on base. Jesus Solorzano had two hits and two RBIs. Omar Luna went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Joe Maloney drove in two for the Boulders. Junior Arrojo scored two runs.

Joplin's six-game home stand against Rockland and St. Paul continues Wednesday night and runs through Sunday. First pitch Wednesday is set for 7:05.
