Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Fargo, ND August 12, 2015- The Gary South Shore RailCats raced out to a 3-0 lead on Wednesday night at Fargo-Moorhead but the RedHawks scored six unanswered runs and got a complete game 12 strike out night from lefty Brandon Mann to take game two 6-3.
Gary took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single from Brennan Metzger and added another pair an inning later with a two out single from Ryan Brockett that scored two. That was the last of the RailCats offense on the evening.
From there out it was all RedHawks and Mann. Fargo picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 3-2. Chuck Fontana got the first two batters with ease but gave up back to back singles to Luke Baily and Joe Bonfe. Charlie Valerio then doubled to left center field to score two and it was a one run game.
The RailCats then saw Fargo take the lead in the home half of the third. Drew Muren worked a one out walk off of Fontana then Chad Mozingo singled to put runners at first and second. Michael Wing then hit a ground ball to second that Alex Hernandez let roll through his legs to score Muren to tie the game at three. The next batter Joe Dunigan, who was a walk off hero the night before with an RBI single, took Fontana deep to right field to make it 6-3 with his 10th home run of the year.
Mann (4-8) then shut down the RailCats the rest of the way picking up the win going the distance matching his season high in strike outs with 12. The RailCats did get two scoreless innings of relief from rookie John Kovalik making his South Shore debut. The Ohio native and product of Slippery Rock University sat four RedHawks down via the strike out. Fontana (3-4) was charged with the loss in his third start for Gary. He went six innings giving up six runs with five being earned with a pair of walks and a strike out.
The two teams will wrap up the series with a 12:30pm day game Thursday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Stadium in Fargo. The RailCats will look to avoid the sweep with LHP Rene Solis (2-6, 4.45) set to face RHP Tyler Herron (4-6, 4.36). The road trip will continue with the RailCats heading to Sioux Falls for a weekend series against the Canaries.
