
Explorers Fall To St. Paul 5-3 Ending Fourteen Game Win Streak

The Sioux City Explorers lose their first game in fifteen match-ups, falling to St Paul 5-3 at Lewis and Clark Park. Sioux City had fourteen consecutive wins without a loss which is an American Association season-high, as well as an Explorers franchise record. (*Courtesy of Sioux City Journal)
Both Sioux City and St. Paul scored runs right away, with the Saints plating two in the first inning off a Vinny DiFazio two run home run. The X's bounced back in the second, answering with a home run of their own smashed by Ryan Court, his second of the series. At the end of two innings, St. Paul 2, Explorers 1.
St. Paul went on to score two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Saints right-fielder Mike Kavasnicka scored from third off a fielders choice, and Willie Argo hit a solo home run to give the Saints a 4-2 lead after five innings of play.
In the sixth, X's third baseman Tommy Mendonca led-off with a double, advanced to third on a fly-out and scored off a sacrifice fly to center field by Tim Colwell to cut the lead to one run.
St. Paul plated another run in the seventh to extend the lead 5-3, which would go on to be the final score of the game. Explorers starter Patrick Johnson (11-1) was charged with his first loss of the season allowing four runs in six innings. Saints left-hander Kramer Sneed (12-2) received the win in the contest.
Sioux City had three batters finish with double-digit hits. Brent Keys and Tommy Mendonca both went 2 for 4, while X's centerfielder Matty Johnson had himself a three hit night at the plate along with an RBI.
