St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA (August 11, 2015) - With an opportunity to clinch the North Division on Tuesday night at Lewis and Clark Park, the St. Paul Saints struggled giving up a season high 17 hits and lost 8-3 to the Sioux City Explorers, who ran their winning streak to 14 games, while the Saints had their 10 game win streak snapped. With the win by the Winnipeg Goldeyes the Saints magic number to clinch the North Division remains at two.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Alonzo Harris singled, stole second and scored on a two-out double by Angelo Songco.

With their best pitcher on the mound, Dustin Crenshaw, the Saints had to feel pretty good, but the Explorers didn't wait long to jump all over Crenshaw. Noah Perio Jr. led off the second with a single and Ryan Court hit a two-run homer, his fifth of the season, to give the Explorers a 2-1 lead. Tommy Mendonca ripped a double to left-center and, with one out, Tim Colwell singled him home to make it 3-1 and Colwell advanced to second on the throw home. Colwell advanced to third on a groundout and scored when shortstop Anthony Phillips made a rare error to give the Explorers a 4-1 lead.

In the fifth the Saints crept to within one when Alonzo Harris reached on an infield single to short. He stole second and, with one out, Vinny DiFazio walked. Angelo Songco was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mike Kvasnicka roped an RBI single to left-center to make it 4-2. That chased started Eric Wordekemper and Jimmer Kennedy came on in relief. A wild pitch scored DiFazio to make it 4-3. With the tying run at third and go ahead run at second Ryan Lashley popped out. Steve Nikorak walked to load the bases, but Phillips bounced back to the mound to end the inning.

That was as close as the Saints would get as the Explorers tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Colwell reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on the throwing error by the catcher DiFazio. With one out Brent Keys made it 5-3 with an RBI single. Crenshaw lasted 6.0 innings allowing five runs, four earned, a career high 13 hits while walking one and striking out two.

The Explorers added the final three runs in the eighth when Matt Koch led off the inning with a single. Colwell then bunted a ball that reliever Chris Peacock fielded and threw away at first for a base hit and an error that put runners at second and third. Matty Johnson's two-run single made it 7-3. Johnson stole second, advanced to third on a bunt single by Keys and scored on a sacrifice fly from Rene Tosoni.

The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Kramer Sneed (11-2, 2.83) to the mound against Explorers RHP Patrick Johnson (11-0, 1.78). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
