'Caps Fall and Now Face Cubs Star

May 25, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

The West Michigan Whitecaps might be feeling like they are coming out of the frying pan and into the fire. The Whitecaps were beaten by the Lansing Lugnuts, 8-4, on Monday night in the state's capitol. Now the 'Caps must go against a highly regarded major league pitcher rehabbing from injury in the minors.

With the score tied 1-1 after three innings, the 'Caps Garth McKinney launched his club-leading eighth home run of the season to give his team a 2-1 lead.

'Caps starter Virgil Vasquez pitched well for five innings - limiting the Lugnuts to one run on one hit before tiring in the sixth and allowing three runs as Lansing took a 4-2 lead.

Doubles by Eric Rodland and Tony Giarratano got the 'Caps back within one run in the seventh before the Lugnuts put the game away with four runs in the eighth.

The Whitecaps and Lugnuts will meet again on Tuesday night in game two of the series at 7:05. Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Prior will start on the mound for Lansing as he continues to rehabilitate his throwing arm against the 'Caps Brian Rogers.
