LumberKings Fall to Fort Wayne in Series Opener

May 25, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton dropped the opener of this series as Jesse Chavez struggled through four and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits and a walk. Joel Kirsten allowed another run before Clinton could get out of the fifth, leaving the LumberKings down 7-3.

A seventh inning rally fell one run short. Justin Hatcher, who had already produced an RBI triple back in the third, got things going with a single and advanced to third on a double by second baseman Abigail Sandoval before Ian Kinsler drove home Hatcher with a single. A throwing error on the play also allowed Sandoval to score. Josh Kreuzer, who like Sandoval went 2-5 with an double and an RBI, drove in Kinsler to cap scoring.

Hatcher, a catcher from TCU, went 2-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one. He is now hitting .324 / .479 / .405 in 37 at-bats.

The best news to come out of this game is that LumberKings pitcher Matt Lorenzo got back on track. Through 20 innings pitched in April, Lorenzo had a 1.35 ERA and the league was hitting .145 against him as he fanned 32 and walked only three. In May, however, Lorenzo slid badly. Through 18.2 innings prior to yesterday, he had a 4.82 ERA and had fanned only 22 while walking nine. Yesterday, however, he got things going in the right direction again with four solid innings, allowing just one run on two hits without issuing a free pass and fanning three.
