Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â Chris Hunter tossed four innings of no-hit relief as a trio of Kernels combined to two-hit Dayton, 2-1, Tuesday in the completion of a Midwest League baseball game that had been suspended by rain Monday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Dayton won the regularly scheduled game, 2-1, behind the four-hit pitching of David Shafer and Brock Till (3-3). Ben Himes' two-out, two-run triple in the top of the ninth put the Dragons ahead, 2-0. The Kernels scored once in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at third base with two outs and Bobby Wilson at the plate. Wilson worked the count to 3-1 before taking two fastballs on the black for a game-ending strikeout.
Nic Touchsone deserved a better fate than a no-decision for the Kernels. Touchstone allowed only three hits, walked one and struck out 11 in seven innings. Dayton starter David Shafer also pitched well, allowing only two hits and facing the minimum number of Kernels batters in six innings.
Hunter (2-2) came into the suspended game when it resumed Tuesday night in the top of the sixth with a Dayton runner at first base and no outs. He retired the first nine batters he faced before Dayton strung together a walk, hit batsman and sacrifice bunt/fielder's choice to load the bases leading off the ninth inning.
Hunter then struck out Elvin Beltre, got Luis Bolivar on a pop out to third and Will Horton on a grounder to second to end the game.
The Kernels scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Pali was hit by a Trey Rice (0-2) pitch with the bases loaded and two outs. That forced in Matt Brown, who had been hit by a pitch leading off the inning.
The Kernels were held to one hit in the opener, a second-inning double by Wilson that extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to 12 games. That streak ended in the nightcap.
The Kernels continue their 12-day homestand on Wednesday with the third game of the four-game series against Dayton. Wednesday's game starts at 6:30 p.m. The Kernels close out the homestand with four games against the Lansing Lugnuts (Cubs), May 28-31. ... All Kernels games can be heard on The Zone, ESPN Radio 1600 AM with John Rodgers.
