Dragons and Kernels Suspended in Sixth, Tied 1-1

May 25, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Dayton Dragons and the Cedar Rapids Kernels each got great starting pitching through four innings and then both teams scrambled in the fifth to try and beat the rain at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in the first game of the four game series Monday night. Heavy rain first delayed the game and eventually postponed the conclusion until Tuesday night, with the score tied at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning.

The starting pitchers Kevin Jepsen (ND) of the Kernels and Omar Segovia (ND) of the Dragons each had the oppositions number through four innings. Neither pitcher had allowed a run and each had allowed only one hit as the score remained tied at zero.

In the top half of the fifth inning, Jepsen got careless and issued a lead off walk to Dayton catcher Miguel Perez. Perez moved from first to third on a double to the right center field gap by Elvin Beltre. Beltre's hit was just the second for the Dragons off Jepsen on the night. With one down and runners at second and third, Will Hudson knocked home Perez with a ground out to second and Dayton led 1-0.

Heading to the bottom of the fifth inning, Dayton had a 1-0 lead and was three outs away from the game being official with the Miami Valley's team leading. Segovia never looked comfortable on the mound with either his footing or the grip on the baseball and he walked the first two batter's of the inning. Matt Abram tried to bunt the runners up to second and third and was safe on a fielder's choice after a bunt forced out Caleb Maher at third for the first out of the inning. With one down, Aaron Peel picked up a SAC fly to right field that scored Matt Brown and tied the game at 1-1.

The downpour became to heavy to continue the game in the top of the sixth inning and the game was delayed, with the Dragons Walter Olmstead at first with no outs and a two-ball no strike count to Ben Himes.

Dayton and Cedar Rapids will conclude the first game of the series on Tuesday beginning at 6:30 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry both games with the pre game show beginning at 6:00 PM. Monday's suspended game will be played to its conclusion and following a 20-minute break, the regularly scheduled Tuesday game get underway. The second game on the night will be scheduled for nine innings, with the Dragons sending RHP David Shafer to the mound. Cedar Rapids will start LHP Nic Touchstone.
