Burlington Bees News Release
Peoria, IL - Terry Evans lined a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Peoria Chiefs (25-18) to a 5-4 win over the Burlington Bees (14-30) tonight on the two-year anniversary of the opening of O'Brien Field. The Bees are now 1-13 all-time in the Chiefs new stadium including a playoff loss in 2002.
The Bees scored first with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Angel Sanchez led off with a single to extend his hitting streak to ten games, but was thrown out at the plate later in the inning as Kenard Springer reached on a fielder's choice with the infield in. Brandon Powell followed that play with a double to left that scored Springer and then scored on two wild pitches from Chiefs starter Kyle McClellan.
The Chiefs got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run by Daric Barton. It was hit second home run and sixth extra base hit in seven games with the Chiefs.
The game remained 2-1 until the top of the ninth inning. Sanchez reached on an error by the shortstop Brendan Ryan and scored on a triple by Mitch Maier to make it 3-1. Maier scored two batters later on a single by Powell, his third hit of the night. After Adam Donachie reached on an error, the Chiefs pulled starter Kyle McClellan and lefty Jackson Paz came in to get lefties Bryan Graham and Kila Kaaihue to end the inning.
Bees' starter John Gragg went back out to the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning to try for his second complete game of the season. Ryan led off with a single and Cody Haerther walked and Gragg was lifted in favor of Dusty Dossett. Dossett got Tyler Parker to pop out to right, but Barton singled to load the bases. Chiefs' manager Joe Cunningham sent up Evans to pinch-hit for Omar Rosa, who already had two doubles in the game. Evans swung and missed at the first pitch, but connected on the second, lining it over the left field wall to give the Chiefs the win. Paz (6-0) picked up the win. Dossett (2-2) blew his second straight save opportunity and got the loss.
The Bees and Chiefs continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at O'Brien Field. RH Chris Goodman (0-4, 6.75) will pitch for the Bees against LH Josh Brey (1-0, 1.90) for the Chiefs. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
