
Kernels Win Suspended Game 2-1; Dragons Win Scheduled Game 2-1

Cedar Rapids, IA â The Dayton Dragons and the Cedar Rapids Kernels worked overtime on Tuesday night, completing Monday's suspended game and playing the regularly scheduled Tuesday night nine inning game. The Kernels picked up the win in the suspended game with a 2-1 victory.
The Dragons and Kernels carried a 1-1 tie into the top half of the sixth inning following the suspension of Monday night's game. LHP Trey Rice (L, 0-2) who pitched the final two outs in the fifth inning for the Dragons on Monday, was back on the hill for the Dragons. RHP Chris Hunter (W, 2-2) took over for the Kernels.
Cedar Rapids picked up the win in the suspended game with a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rice loaded the bases with two down, on two walks and a hit batsman. Matt Pali picked up the game winning RBI when Rice plunked him with a pitch on a two-strike count. Dayton had its big chance in the top of the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and none out, Elvin Beltre struck out, Luis Bolivar popped out to third and Will Hudson grounded out to second to end the game and the Kernels picked up the 2-1 win.
Starting pitching was dominate once again at Veteran's Memorial Stadium as both Dayton starter David Shafer (ND) and Kernels starter Nic Touchstone (ND) were both dominate on the night. Shafer pitched 6.0 innings allowing just two hits, with four strikeouts and no walks on the night. Touchstone lasted 7.0 innings with similar results. The left hander allowed three hits, no runs a struck out 11 Dragons, with one walk in also earning no decision.
The Dragons got on the board with two out in the top of the ninth inning off Kernel reliever Bob Zimmerman (L, 2-4). With one down Ryan Fry singled and moved to third on a Walter Olmstead double into the right field corner. After Kyle Smith struck out, Ben Himes tripled into the gap in right center scoring both runners and Dayton led 2-0.
Cedar Rapids made things interesting off Brock Till (W, 3-3) in the bottom of the ninth. Blake Balkcom led the inning off with a single and moved to second on a one out hit by Aaron Peel. Both runners advanced 90 feet on a Miguel Perez passed ball. With two down an Olmstead error scored Balkcom to make it a one run game at 2-1. Till struck out Bobby Wilson looking with the tying run at third and winning run at first to preserve the win.
The third game of the Dayton and Cedar Rapids series will take place Wednesday night at 7:30 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 7:00 PM. The Dragons will send RHP Josh Thigpen to the mound on Wednesday night, while Cedar Rapids will start LHP Micah Posey.
