Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - After letting a 5-3 lead get away for the second straight day in the top of the ninth inning, the Kane County Cougars came right back with a run in the bottom of the ninth to score a 6-5 victory over the Clinton LumberKings on Tuesday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Eddie Orozco (1-1) entered the contest in the top of the ninth in search of his first save but walked Brock Hebert to start the frame. Ketel Marte tried to bunt his way on, but Orozco's throw to first was over Dan Vogelbach's head, putting the tying runs in scoring position. Hebert scored on a groundout from Dario Pizzano while Orozco fired a wild pitch to bring in Marte, tying the game at 5-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars (2-4) went right back to work against Grady Wood (0-1). Gioskar Amaya singled with one out as did Vogelbach. Wood uncorked a wild pitch, pushing each runner up a base while Jeimer Candelario ended the contest, slinging a liner to left over Pizzano's head for the game-winner.
Pierce Johnson got the start for the Cougars and tossed five innings while coughing up two runs. Both of those runs came in the first as Pizzano singled and scored on a Jabari Henry sac fly. Gaby Guerrero gave the LumberKings (2-4) a two-run cushion with a knock to draw home Guillermo Pimentel.
In the second, the Cougars grabbed the lead right back with a three-spot, but Jeff Antigua let the lead get away by allowing an RBI double to Carlton Tanabe in the sixth to make it 3-3. Rock Shoulders cracked his second homer in the bottom of the sixth to help the Cougars regain the advantage. Bijan Rademacher added a run-scoring double in the eighth.
The Cougars will look to finish their seven-game, season-opening homestand with a three-game sweep of the LumberKings on Wednesday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch. Right-hander Tayler Scott (0-0) starts for the Cougars against southpaw Scott DeCecco (0-1). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
