Hawks Edge Dragons 1-0 in South Bend

South Bend, Ind.-South Bend starting pitcher Jesse Darrah allowed only one base runner over seven shutout innings as the Silver Hawks edged the Dayton Dragons 1-0 on Tuesday night. The Silver Hawks have won the first two games of the three-game set as they dropped the Dragons to 2-4 on the season. South Bend improved to 4-2.

Darrah (1-0) retired 21 of the 22 batters he faced, striking out eight to earn the win. Relievers Chris Capper and R.J. Hively retired six of the last seven Dragons batters over the final two innings to close out the South Bend victory.

Dragons starting pitcher Robert Stephenson (0-1) worked five innings and pitched well, striking out nine. He allowed five hits and one run with one walk. Dragons reliever Jesus Adames followed Stephenson to the mound and fired two scoreless innings without allowing a hit. Adames walked one and struck out one. Sean Lucas pitched a perfect final inning for the Dragons.

The Silver Hawks scored in the third inning when Kevin Medrano doubled to left field to begin the frame and then scored on a bouncer through the middle off the bat of Socrates Brito. It turned out to be the game's only run. South Bend collected only one more hit the rest of the night but held their lead.

The Dragons had two hits. Zach Vincej lined a double to left field with one out in the fourth but was stranded at second. Seth Mejias-Brean reached on an infield single to start the eighth. He was also stranded at second.

The Dragons battle the Silver Hawks in the finale of the series and wrap-up to a seven-game road trip on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Ismael Guillon (0-1, 5.40) will make his second start of the year for Dayton against South Bend's Daniel Watts (1-0, 1.50). The Dragons home opener is Thursday, April 11 at Fifth Third Field against the Great Lakes Loons.
