South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

When the game began Tuesday night, unseasonably warm weather and a 19 knot gale out to center field gave every indication it would be a hitter's night. However, it soon became clear that this contest between the South Bend Silver Hawks and the Dayton Dragons would be controlled by the pitchers. Altogether, the starters combined for seventeen strikeouts as they kept the hitters guessing. South Bend prevailed 1-0, to retain a share of the Midwest League Eastern Division lead.

Jesse Darrah (1-0) led the way for the Silver Hawks, Class-A affiliate of the National League West leading Arizona Diamondbacks, working until fans stretched in the seventh. He faced one over the minimum and allowed only one hit, while striking out eight on 91 pitches.

The Hawks would cross the plate first, bringing home the game's only run in the bottom of the third. Kevin Medrano led off the inning with a double, down the left field line. Socrates Brito would follow with a single to shallow center field, bringing home Medrano. Brito was three for four on the night and leads the team with five RBI. In the top of the fifth inning Brito robbed Dayton third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean of a possible extra base hit with a diving catch in the outfield.

Dayton starter, Robert Stephenson (0-1), would limit the Hawks' attack to just five hits as he struck out nine, with a fastball reaching into the upper nineties. His defense also came to his aid as catcher and University of Notre Dame product, Joe Hudson, made a diving grab over the dugout fence.

The first hit for the Dayton Dragons, Class-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, wouldn't come until the top of the fourth inning with a double to left field by shortstop Zach Vincej. On the night, Dayton would not have a base runner advance past second. Down the stretch Chris Capper and RJ Hively (S, 1) combined to keep the Dragon's offense at bay. Together they held Dayton to one hit and no runs over two innings. Hively struck out one to earn the save.

The Hawks and Dragons will be back in action again Wednesday night with the conclusion of the three game series. Game time is slated for 7:05pm. Perfect for feeding your family, as on Wednesdays kids eat free!
