Ames Earns First Win as Hot Rods Roll
April 9, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Marty Gantt and Tommy Coyle each drove in three runs to lead the Bowling Green Hot Rods (4-2) to a 8-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (3-3) on Tuesday morning/afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark. In the second game of the three-game series, Jeff Ames was strong in his five innings in the starter's role to earn his first win of the season. The Hot Rods have now won three straight games and have clinched the series win against Lansing.
Lansing struck for the game's first run when Christian Lopes homered with two outs in the top of the first inning. The Hot Rods scored their first two runs on one of the craziest plays in the history of Bowling Green Ballpark. With two outs and Ryan Dunn at first base, Marty Gantt sent a fly ball down the line in right field that initially went into the glove of Lansing right fielder Carlos Ramirez in fair territory. Ramirez's momentum took him crashing over the padded wall in right field, and the ball squirted out onto the field of play. With no one to claim the ball, Gantt scooted around every bag for an inside-the-park, two-run home run.
Later in that same inning, Tyler Goeddel drove home a run with a two-out RBI-single. In the bottom of the third, Tommy Coyle doubled home Luke Maile, and Leonardo Reginatto brought in a tally with his third RBI-groundout of the young season.
The Hot Rods offense added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run Coyle single. With the Bowling Green bats rolling, starter Jeff Ames was cruising on the mound and earned his first win in a Hot Rods uniform. The Vancouver, WA, native never allowed the Lugnuts have an at bat with a runner in scoring position. Ames continues a stellar start to the season for Hot Rods starters. In 25.2 innings to begin the season, Hot Rods starters have surrendered just five earned runs.
Lansing added two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the early run support generated by the Hot Rods offense proved to be enough in the 8-3 victory. In the win, the Hot Rods tied the franchise record for steals in a game with six.
The third and final contest of the three-game series between the Hot Rods and Lugnuts is Wednesday night at 7:05 PM as the Hot Rods go for the sweep. The Hot Rods will give the start to LHP Blake Snell (0-1, 10.12), while the Lugnuts will counter with RHP Taylor Cole (1-0, 0.00). Tune in to the Forever Communications Pregame show with Hank Fuerst and Chris Kleinhans-Schulz at 6:35 PM CDT. The broadcast can be found on BGHotRods.com, 1340WBGN.com, and 1340 WBGN-AM.
The homestand continues with Warren County Wednesday, Thrifty Thursday/College Night, Print Media Team Poster giveaway on Friday, and Saturday's Fantastic Fireworks presented by Candlewood Suites and WBKO.
