MWL1 Great Lakes Loons

Camels Still Have Not Lost

July 31, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - There's just no stopping the Great Lakes Camels. After two weeks off, the Loons transformed into their alter ego for yet another Wednesday game at Dow Diamond with an 8-2 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps.

It's still a perfect record for the Camels as they've yet to lose in their existence dating back to August 2018. Nine games, and nine wins. On top of that, the Camels/Loons have now won 16 of their last 21 games and improved to 66-39 (.629) on the season. It remains the best record in the Midwest League.

Stephen Kolek (W, 7-6) had possibly his best outing of his Los Angeles Dodgers minor-league career as he struck out a career-high 10 batters over 6 IP allowing just one earned run. Justin Hagenman (SV, 6) followed that up with three scoreless innings for the nine-out save.

Timely hitting was the name of the game as the Camels managed just eight hits, but were able to produce eight runs thanks to going 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Dan Robinson, Luke Heyer and James Outman each had two hits, with Robinson and Outman teaming up to drive in five runs on their own. Outman launched his eighth home run of the season, while Luke Heyer knew his 12th of the season was gone off the bat.

Jacob Amaya drove in a run despite going 0-for-3 with a walk. The bigger story with him is, he's steadily been climbing the ranks in the MWL race for RBI leader. Amaya ranks 4th in the league with 56 and is looking up at Chris Betts (Bowling Green) and Brady Whalen (Peoria) who are tied for the lead with 64.

PLAYOFFS CLINCHED

This is your friendly reminder that the Loons will be playing in the Midwest League Playoffs this season after already clinching a spot by winning the 1st Half Eastern Division Championship. Tickers are ON SALE NOW for the guaranteed home game on Thursday, Sept. 5.

TRADE DEADLINE NOTES

Three former Loons were involved in roster turnover during Wednesday's Major League Baseball Trade Deadline hubbub. Outfielder Niko Hulsizer ('19) was traded by the Dodgers to the Tampa Bay Rays for reliever Adam Kolarek; from the 2015 team, pitcher Brock Stewart was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays; and pitcher Dustin May, who started the 2017 MWL All-Star Game as a Loon, was the 71st former player to get called up to the big leagues. He's expected to make his debut Friday at Dodger Stadium against the Padres.
