Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
BELOIT, WIS. - The Beloit Snappers scored 11 early runs Wednesday night at Pohlman Field and won a 12-5 decision against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Beloit (15-23, 42-64) evened this four-game series with Cedar Rapids (21-17, 60-48) at one win apiece.
Two unearned runs put the Snappers ahead for good in the first inning. Devin Foyle extended the frame on a two-out single before Nick Osborne reached via error. John Jones and Anthony Churlin followed with back-to-back RBI singles for a 2-0 lead.
A nine-run third-inning outburst gave Beloit a one-sided advantage of 11-0. Churlin's two-run single with one out opened the scoring. Nick Ward and Lester Madden hit consecutive two-out RBI singles, and Max Schuemann delivered an RBI double. Madden added his own run later on a wild pitch. Near the end of the inning, Osborne's run-scoring single coupled with an error cleared the bases.
Cedar Rapids broke up Beloit's bids for a perfect game, a no-hitter, and a shutout in the fifth. Alex Isola drew a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Albee Weiss homered to center field and sliced the deficit to 11-2. The two-run blast was the Midwest League-leading 87th home run of the 2019 Kernels season.
The Snappers secured a 12-2 lead during the seventh. A two-out double by Schuemann and a two-out single from Joseph Pena kept the inning alive. Foyle batted next and singled to drive in Schuemann.
Three Kernels runs within the ninth trimmed the final margin to 12-5. Cedar Rapids promptly loaded the bases for Isola, and a balk allowed Spencer Steer to come home. Isola brought in Gabe Snyder and Wander Javier with an RBI single, but a double play and a fly out finished the game.
Jhenderson Hurtado (1-0) earned his first Midwest League victory along with the second quality start of his professional career. He allowed just two runs over a career-high-tying six innings and posting a game-high seven strikeouts. Hurtado retired 18 of his 20 batters faced.
Kody Funderburk (0-1) surrendered 10 runs including seven earned runs in 2.2 frames in a losing decision. Andrew Cabezas limited Beloit to one unearned run in relief before position players Trevor Casanova and Daniel Ozoria combined for the final 2.2 innings of work.
Thursday's contest between Cedar Rapids and Beloit is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Pohlman Field. Kernels right-hander Luis Rijo (4-6, 2.55) will square off with Snappers right-hander Aiden McIntyre (2-8, 5.47), and Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will have the call Thursday on 1450 KMRY AM and 93.1 KMRY FM and also online at www.kmryradio.com and www.kernels.com.
