July 31, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
About Yesterday.. The Hot Rods dropped the first game of a four-game series to the Dayton Dragons in the series opener, 6-1 on Tuesday. Bowling Green got on the board in the first against Reds first-round pick Nick Lodolo, but didn't get anything after. Ruben Cardenas made his Hot Rods debut, batting cleanup while playing right field. Cardenas drove in Ford Proctor from second with a double to give the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead in the first, but Dayton took the lead in the bottom of the second and never looked back. The Dragons loaded the bases four times during Tuesday's contest and stranded 15 runners in the Hot Rods 6-1 loss.
Big News... The Hot Rods announced on Wednesday that the club has furthered their relationship with Hopkinsville, Kentucky-based distillery Casey Jones. The two entities have worked together to produce a product called "Grand Slam Moonshine" which is being bottled, labeled, and boxed this week and will be available at Bowling Green Ballpark beginning in August for mixed drinks. The new product will hit the shelves thereafter.
Chasing History... Chris Betts hit his 17th home run of the season on Monday and is the active HR leading in the Midwest League heading into Tuesday's game and one behind former Lake County Captain Will Benson's total of 18 (he's since been promoted to A+ Lynchburg). The homer moves Betts into a tie for fourth with Phillip Wunderlich (2011) for the fourth-most homers in a single season in Hot Rods franchise history. He's two away from tying for third with 2018 Hot Rods Moises Gomez (19), four from second place (Ronaldo Hernandez, 21, 2018), and five from first (Derek Dietrich, 22, 2011).
Tradewinds Are Blowing... With the MLB trade deadline just one day away, teams have been actively dealing, with the Hot Rods adding a player as result. Tampa Bay and Cleveland agreed to a deal Sunday, sending infielder Christian Arroyo and former Hot Rods pitcher Hunter Wood to the Indians. In exchange, the Rays received outfielder Ruben Cardenas, formerly of the Lake County Captains, who was added to the Bowling Green roster this morning. Cardenas batted .284 in 84 games for Lake County, swatting ten home runs with 54 RBI. In a corresponding move, outfielder Izzy Wilson was promoted to Class A+ Charlotte.
Aranda Back at it Again... Jonathan Aranda has yet another long hit streak in 2019 and is the only Hot Rod to have a batting average over .300. After breaking off a nine-game streak early in July, the lefty is at it again, this time batting .333 over his last seven games with a hit in each dating back to July 21.
Yesterday's Notes... Cardenas played in his first game as a Rays farmhand after being traded on Monday... He also collected his first hit, an RBI double, in his first plate appearance... Proctor extended his hit streak to five games... Betts has a three-game hit streak... The Hot Rods are 8-5 against the Dragons this season... Tuesday was the 19th time BG lost when scoring the first run of the game... The Hot Rods are 14-15 against left handed starters this season... Liberatore's 2.0 innings of work is his shortest start of the season... BG is 21-13 in games that open a series... The Hot Rods are 10-34 when they are out-hit by the opponent...
