Worcester IceCats News Release

WORCESTER, MA- The Worcester IceCats of the American Hockey League (AHL) today announced the tour schedule for the Calder Cup, the American Hockey League's championship trophy, for Friday, April 4th.

The Calder Cup 2003 Tour offers fans the opportunity to view up close and take pictures with one of the oldest trophies in North American sports. The Calder Cup, which has been competed for since the 1936-37 season, features the names of players, coaches and support staff from the last 20 American Hockey League champions, and is accompanied by a special display highlighting the intensity and excitement of the Calder Cup Playoffs. In conjunction with the tour, the Worcester IceCats are proud to display the Cup at various locations throughout the Worcester County Community. Friday's tour schedule is listed below.

The AHL's championship trophy is named after Hockey Hall of Famer Frank Calder, who served as the first president of the National Hockey League from 1917-43. During the 1920s, Calder was instrumental in guiding professional hockey into the mainstream of the United States' major cities, including New York, Boston, Chicago and Detroit, while also helping in the formation of the American Hockey League.

Seventeen members of the Hockey Hall of Fame are among the winners of the Calder Cup, including Terry Sawchuk, Emile Francis, Gerry Cheevers, Larry Robinson and Johnny Bower. Additionally, more than 100 players and coaches have won both the Calder Cup and the Stanley Cup in their careers, among them Patrick Roy, Andy Bathgate, Doug Harvey and Billy Smith. Present IceCats, Eric Nickulas, Terry Virtue, Jason Dawe and Sergei Varlamov have all had their names etched into the AHL's most coveted prize.

The IceCats next Centrum Centre game is Friday, April 4th at 7:05 PM against the Manchester Monarchs.
