Wheeling Nailers News Release
ELMIRA, NY- The Wheeling Nailers got off to a strong start on Friday night, as they held a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. Unfortunately, the Elmira Jackals came to life in the final period, scoring three times, as they came back to defeat Wheeling 3-2, in front of 4,174 fans at First Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Nailers opened the scoring at the 3:48 mark of the second. Zack Torquato and Chris Barton broke out of their own zone, and rushed the other way on a 2-on-1. Torquato started the rush with a pass to Barton on his left, before Barton returned the favor, setting up Torquato with an empty net in front of him. Later in the frame, Wheeling cashed in on a power play, as Mike Devin received two minutes for delay of game. Cody Chupp entered the offensive zone on the right side, and slipped a pass low to Paul Crowder, who lifted a shot into the top part of the goal.
In the third period, the Jackals turned the game around, starting with Dustin Gazley's goal from the right side of the net at the 1:21 mark of the frame. A little more than six minutes later, Elmira pulled even, as Mike Radja picked up the puck in the right circle, skated toward the middle, and slipped a shot under Patrick Killeen's right pad. 55 seconds after that, the home team took the lead for the first time on the evening, as Jordan Pietrus snapped in a high wrist shot, shortly after gaining the offensive blueline.
The Nailers put on a surge in the final two minutes of the contest, while playing with the man advantage, but were unable to get the equalizer, as the Jackals snuck away with a 3-2 victory.
Brian Stewart earned the win for Elmira, stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced. Patrick Killeen came up short for Wheeling, despite making 22 saves on 25 shots.
The Nailers return home to WesBanco Arena on Saturday night for a 7:35 face-off against the Reading Royals.
