DULUTH, GA -- The Gwinnett Gladiators seven game unbeaten streak was snapped in a 3-1 loss against the Florida Everblades on Friday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Despite the loss, the Gladiators remain in first place in the ECHL's South Division with 39 points, three points ahead of the Everblades.
The Gladiators and Everblades skated to a scoreless opening period with Gwinnett outshooting Florida 16-to-2.
Gwinnett's Andy Brandt opened the scoring of the game with a punch passed Florida's netminder Pat Nagle to put the Glads up by one at the 8:35 mark of the second period. Justin Milo and Chris Clackson notched an assist each on the opening goal. Chris Clackson's assist helped him pick up his 11th point for the month of December.
Florida did not hesitate to answer Gwinnett with two quick power-play goals 48 seconds apart to put the Blades up 2-1 to finish the middle period. Defenseman David Fischer posted an unassisted goal for the Blades as he slipped the puck passed Gladiator goaltender Jeff Jakaitis.
The goal snapped Jakaitis' shutout streak 10:54 into the second period stopping the netminder streak 20:32 shy of tying the ECHL's record for longest shutout sequence.
Florida added an empty net goal in the third period on the power play to put the game away. Matt Beca rolled the puck into the empty net with 14 seconds left in the final period for the unassisted goal.
Gwinnett returns to action on Friday, January 6th when they host the Florida Everblades at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 7:35 p.m.
The Gladiators are the ECHL Affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres and the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League and are members of the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
