Burroughs scores lone goal in Bridgeport's second straight setback

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Kyle Burroughs scored his fifth goal of the season less than three minutes into the first period on Saturday, but the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (24-22-5-3), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, suffered a 2-1 loss to the Charlotte Checkers (31-22-0-3) at Webster Bank Arena.
Julien Gauthier scored both goals for the visitors as Charlotte improved to 4-2-0-0 against Bridgeport this season. Between the pipes, goaltender Eamon McAdam (0-1-0) made 19 saves in his first AHL start of the season after stopping 15 shots in relief last night.
The Sound Tigers have now lost seven of their last eight games.
Burroughs lit the lamp just 2:16 into the opening period with his first goal since Jan. 17 - also against Charlotte. Following a broken play by the Checkers in the neutral zone, Burroughs collected the puck and initiated a 2-on-1 rush across the blue line. The third-year defenseman had Steve Bernier to his left, but didn't use him and fired a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Alex Nedeljkovic's glove.
Charlotte tied the game a little less than 13 minutes later when Gauthier capitalized on a giveaway. Following a costly Bridgeport turnover, Brenden Kichton issued a lead pass to Gauthier over the stripe, where he skated to the bottom of the right circle and guided a wrist shot over McAdam's stick at 14:59.
Gauthier beat McAdam for a second time and netted the eventual game-winner at the two-minute mark of the middle frame. Janne Kuokkanen forced a pass to Kichton from behind the net, and the latter sent a rocket to the goal from the parameter. Gauthier redirected it at the left post for his 11th tally of the season to make it 2-1.
Business picked up in the third period as the Sound Tigers created several high-percentage chances against Nedeljkovic. Bridgeport also outshot Charlotte 8-4 in the frame, but couldn't even the contest.
The Sound Tigers finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Bridgeport's power play is now 0-for-17 over its last five outings.
In addition, Bridgeport outshot Charlotte 22-21, while Nedeljkovic (24-10-2) made 21 saves. The Checkers' netminder leads the AHL with 24 wins this season.
Next Time Out: The Sound Tigers conclude a three-game series tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. rematch against the Charlotte Checkers at Webster Bank Arena. New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson will be in attendance and the former Sound Tiger will meet fans and sign autographs beginning at 2:30 p.m. The first 2,500 fans will also receive his bobblehead when doors open at 2 p.m., courtesy of Nutmeg Bowl and Our Backyard Playplace of Fairfield.
