Burlington takes series finale from Kernels 6-5
June 6, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Burlington Bees (29-26) pushed across the winning run in the seventh inning without the benefit of a base hit as they took the final game of a four-game series from the Kernels (26-32) with a 6-5 win in front of 1,986 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Miguel Vega was hit by a Robert Romero (0-2) pitch, then stole second before being replaced by pinch-runner Valentino Arce when he was banged up on the play. Brady Everett then drew a walk before both runners moved up on a sacrifice attempt by Carlos Arroyo. Arroyo's hit was fielded by first baseman Mark Trumbo, but his throw to third was not in time to erase Arce. Jose Duarte then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to plate the game-winner.
Yovany Damico (1-4), a member of the 2005 Midwest League All-Star squad, picked up the victory with 1 1/3 innings of relief work despite allowing a game-tying run on a sacrifice foul pop by Jordan Renz in the sixth that plated Brad Coon.
Chris Hayes worked the final three innings for a Goose Gossage-style save, his fourth of the season, as the Bees moved to within one game of the Peoria Chiefs for the second and final first half playoff spot.
The Kernels jumped to an early lead off Burlington starter Carlos Rosa in the first inning when Flint Wipke roped a two-run double to center to plate Hainley Statia and Dallas Morris. Wipke was thrown out trying to stretch the two-bagger into a triple.
Burlington touched up Kernels starter Stephen Marek for a run in the second on a single to center by catcher Jeff Howell before taking their first lead in the third. Jeremy Jirschele had an RBI double for the Bees that inning and scored when Mario Lisson lifted a sacrifice to right.
The Kernels tied the game up in the fourth when Brett Martinez crossed home via a double off the bat of second baseman Marco Albano, then took the lead in the fifth via the long ball. Renz cracked his Midwest League-leading 13th homer of the year off Rosa to lead off the fifth. The blast barely cleared the wall in left, but it was enough to put the Kernels up 4-3.
