Rowlett clubs game-winner in 12th

June 6, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities played into extra innings for the third time in their last five ballgames, surviving a 12-inning pitchers duel and pulling out a 2-0 win in front of 5,103 exhilarated Swing fans at John O'Donnell Stadium Tuesday night. Casey Rowlett blasted his first home run of the year with one out in the final inning, rewarding a pitching staff that retired 27 in a row to end the game.

Quad Cities (27-29) continues to streak with seven wins in their last eight games, improving to 5-5 in extra-inning contests and sitting just four games out of the MWL-West wild card spot with 12 games remaining in the first half. Cedar Rapids (26-33) has now dropped four in a row.

In a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 12th, Rich Giannotti - who spent the 2005 season with the Kernels before being released by the Angels during spring training - coaxed a walk to open the frame in his first game with the Swing. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to second, Rowlett turned on a ball and ripped it down the left field line. As the crowd exploded and manager Keith Mitchell threw his fist in the air along the third base line, Rowlett's second career home run carried inside of the foul pole and landed on the berm. The dugout poured out towards home plate, as Quad Cities celebrated a thrilling 2-0 victory.

Though he did not figure into the decision Trey Hearne was brilliant in making his third start (16th appearance) of the season, this one in place of Mark McCormick (shoulder tendonitis). He allowed one hit in each of the first three innings and nothing more, establishing career highs with seven innings pitched and seven strikeouts. The 28th round pick in 2005 out of Texas A&M Corpus Christi did not allow a baserunner after the third inning, retiring the last 12 batters he faced. Hearne was limited in the number of pitches he had to work with, but lasted seven innings by keeping his pitch count under 15 pitches in each of his frames on the mound.

His effectiveness carried over into the Swing bullpen, as Brian Stitt and Matt Trent chipped in with five perfect innings of their own. Trent (2-2) picked up the win with four strikeouts over the final three innings as the trio of hurlers set down the final 27 batters they faced in order, holding Cedar Rapids without a baserunner past the third inning.

Moose Mosebach was equally stingy for the Kernels, lasting eight scoreless innings. After taking the complete game loss in a 1-0 game his last time out, the 21-year-old struck out five while allowing three hits and two walks. The Kernels have now gone without a run over the last 27 innings pitched by Mosebach, who had dropped his previous four starts despite a respectable 3.68 ERA.

Tim Didjurgis (0-3) was saddled with the loss after going 2.1 innings, walking three and allowing two hits. It was the first home run allowed this season by Didjurgis.
