Devil Rays Groce out Silver Hawks
June 6, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Bend - Prosperity didn't last very long for the South Bend Silver Hawks. The Hawks, who took three-of-four in their previous series from the Lansing Lugnuts and moved above .500 for the first time since April 15, were shelled for four runs in the first and single-handedly defeated by Garret Groce's offensive falling 9-4 to the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (28-30).
The Devil Rays scored all the runs they would need in the first. With one out John Matulia doubled to center field and continued to third on a groundout. J.T. Hall's groundout to second gave the Devil Rays a 1-0 lead. Garrett Groce reached on a bunt single and came around to score on a Rhyne Hughes double to right center field and a 2-0 lead. David Cardona followed by scorching a home run to left field to put Southwest Michigan on top 4-0.
Garrett Groce ended his perfect plate night, by belting a two-run homerun in the fifth and a solo blast in the seventh.
Jake McGee (5-5) gets the win and Hawks starter Cody Evans (2-7) suffers the loss.
The Silver Hawks (28-28) continue their four game set Wednesday night with first pitch at 7:00 PM and gates opening at 6:00 PM.
