Hawks To Fly In Davenport
June 6, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The Midwest League has announced the 2006 All-Star roster. Five players from the Silver Hawks were chosen for the Midwest league Summer Classic to be hosted by the Swing of the Quad Cities on June 20 in Davenport, IA. Eddie Baeza (P), Vince Bongiovanni (P), Pedro Ciriaco (SS), Donald Julio (P) and Justin Upton (CF) will represent the Hawks, who had 11 players make last season's all-star team.
Eddie Baeza leads the Silver Hawks starters with an ERA of 2.68, while compiling a 3-2 record in nine starts this season. Baeza, a native of Sun Valley, CA, is tied for the fewest home runs allowed by Hawks starters (one), while leading the entire staff in strikeouts (50).
Relief pitcher Vince Bongiovanni has been a pleasant addition to the Hawks bullpen. The right-hander is undefeated in 2006 (3-0) and is one of four pitchers on the team with an earned run average below two (1.98). Bongiovanni has done a good job of keeping the opposition off the bases as well. Opponents are hitting just .188 against Bongiovanni.
Pedro Ciriaco has been a stalwart at shortstop for the Silver Hawks, starting 51-of-55 games. The slick fielding middle infielder is fifth on the team in batting average (.274), while leading the team in runs (35).
Reliever Donald Julio enters the all-star game with the lowest ERA in the team (1.24) in 17 games. Julio has also done a good job of thwarting the opponents. The opposition is hitting .152 and he has a strikeout ratio close to 3:1, with 30 strikeouts and nine walks.
Justin Upton, who is a shortstop by trade, has made the move to the outfield without any ill affects. The 18-year old first year player is second on the team in average (.282), slugging percentage (.368) and third in RBI (20). Upton has made 38 starts in center field.
The Silver Hawks close an eight game homestand, with a four game series against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays tonight through Friday, with game times slated for 7PM and gates opening at 6PM. To purchase by phone, fans can call (574) 235-9988 or visit the Silver Hawks website at silverhawks.com.
