St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The bullpen did its job on Saturday afternoon at CHS Field. They tossed 4.2 hitless, scoreless innings, but the offense couldn't capitalize on its chances stranding 10 runners in a 3-1 loss to the Indianapolis Indians in front of 5,134. The loss drops the Saints to 21-15 on the season.
The Saints grabbed the lead in the first on a solo homer by Matt Wallner, his third of the season, making it 1-0.
The Indians knotted the game at one in the second when Cal Mitchell led off with a single to right, stole second, and scored on a single from Mark Mathias.
One inning later the Indians grabbed the lead. Nick Gonzales led off with a walk and moved to second on a ground out. After a walk to Endy Rodríguez put runners at first and second, Ryan Vilade reached on an infield single to second baseman Eduoard Julien and Julien's throw to first skipped away allowing Gonzalez to score while sending Rodríguez to third as the Indians took a 2-1 lead. Mitchell's sacrifice fly plated Rodríguez making it 3-1. Saints starter Aaron Sanchez went 4.1 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.
Kody Funderburk worked 2.0 hitless, scoreless innings while walking one and striking out three. Patrick Murphy went 1.2 hitless, shutout innings while hitting a batter and striking out one. Oliver Ortega worked a scoreless ninth while walking two and striking out one.
The Saints had the tying or go ahead runs on in the third and fifth through eighth innings, but couldn't come up with the big hit. They finished 1-9 with runners in scoring position. Wallner went 2-3 with a double, home run, RBI, and a run scored.
The same two teams meet on Sunday afternoon at 2:07 p.m. in the finale of the six-game series. The Saints send RHP Jordan Balazovic (0-1, 1.80) to the mound against Indians LHP Caleb Smith (1-3, 8.78). The game can be seen on the Saints Broadcast Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities, the Bally Live app (free), MiLB.TV (subscription), and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
