JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In a game that saw 23 runs cross the plate on a combined 25 hits, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell 13-10 to the Norfolk Tides Saturday night in front of 8,673 fans at 121 Financial Ballpark.
The Tides (28-9) drew first blood with a three-spot in the top of the first inning. Colton Cowser sent the first pitch he saw from Jumbo Shrimp (18-18) starter George Soriano (0-1) to right field for a single. After a line out, Josh Lester knocked a triple to score the first run of the contest. Jordan Westburg walked, and a throwing error allowed Lester to come home for run number two. Then, back-to-back singles by Daz Cameron and Shayne Fontana scraped across another run to make it a 3-0 Norfolk advantage.
Jacksonville struck back with a duo of runs in the home half of the first frame against Norfolk starter Noah Denoyer. Edwards sliced a leadoff double and Jerar Encarnacion (6) blasted a two-run home run, cutting the lead to 3-2.
The Tides tacked on four more runs in the second inning. Cowser doubled and a single by Connor Norby advanced Cowser from second. After a ground out, two consecutive walks juiced the bases with one down. Jackson Rose entered in relief and tallied two strikeouts in the inning, but surrendered a single to Fontana, adding a pair of runs before a double steal extended the lead to 7-2.
In the third inning, Cowser walked and Norby hit a double to put runners on second and third. Josh Lester notched a sacrifice fly, plating the eighth run for Norfolk. Westburg (10) hit a two-run home run to make it a 10-2 Tides lead.
Jacksonville responded with a trio of runs of their own in the third inning to keep the contest in sight. Charles Leblanc walked to begin the inning before a Jordan Groshans single put runners at the corners. Brian Miller doubled in Jacksonville's third run of the game. Two batters later, C.J. Hinojosa singled in two more runs, making it a 10-5 contest.
A pair of walks and single, including a two-run base knock by Miller, in the fourth frame by the Jumbo Shrimp scored two more runs to cut into the Norfolk lead, 10-7.
The Tides built their lead back up in the fifth. Cowser singled and Lester (9) blasted a two-run home run, extending the Norfolk lead to 12-7.
