Bulldogs Bite Crunch in Overtime

Syracuse, NY - The first hat-trick in the career of Maksim Mayorov wasn't enough for the Syracuse Crunch, as Aaron Palushaj tied the game with just over two minutes left in regulation and Grant Stevenson's deflection past Dan Taylor 1:37 into the extra session gave visiting Hamilton the 5-4 win in front of 5,784 fans tonight at the War Memorial at Oncenter.

Tyler Murovich did not waste any time putting the Crunch on the board first, scoring just 31 seconds into the game. From his knees, Nick Holden tapped the puck to Murovich who then walked around a pair of Bulldog defenseman and slid the puck between the legs of Hamilton goaltender Cedrick Desjardins for his second goal of the season.

Hamilton answered back to tie the game at one at the 7:35 mark of the first on a goal by J.T. Wyman, who took a pass off the stick of Alex Henry. Wyman skated into the Crunch defensive zone with a full head of steam, cut around the defense and slipped the puck past a sprawled out Dan Taylor for his 16th goal of the year.

At the 11:37 mark, Mayorov tallied his 13th goal of the season on a tic-tac-toe passing play, banging home a perfect feed from David Liffiton at the right side of the crease past Desjardins.

Hamilton tied the score at 2-2 on a goal by Ryan Russell who put away his 19th of the season off a rebound from a point shot by Hunter Bishop. Taylor made the initial save on Bishop, but bobbled the rebound giving Russell the tap in goal.

The score was deadlocked at 2-2 after the game's first 20 minutes.

Hamilton took a 3-2 lead on J.T. Wyman's second goal of the game and 17th of the season. Wyman snuck out of the corner and flipped the puck through the five-hole of Taylor just 3:17 into the second period. The goal was unassisted.

Mayorov buried his second goal of the night and 14th of the season with just 16 seconds left in the second period. Mayorov sat on the back-door and received a tape to tape pass from Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman and tipped it past Desjardins.

The score at the end of the second period was knotted up at 3-3.

Mayorov was not done after his tally late in the second period. At the 9:28 mark of the third, the Andizhan, Russia native took a long breakout pass from Mike Ratchuk and sniped the disk past Desjardins low to the low blocker side for his first career hat-trick. The goal gave the Crunch a 4-3 lead.

Hamilton tied the score at four with 2:04 left in the third on fluke bounce in front of Dan Taylor. The goal was credited to Aaron Palushaj with the assists coming from Ryan White and Shawn Belle.

At the end of regulation the score was 4-4 with Hamilton outshooting the Crunch 40 to 24 after 60 minutes of play.

Just 1:37 into the overtime session, Stevenson's deflection ricocheted over the glove of Taylor to down the Crunch 5-4.

The Crunch take on arch-rival Rochester in their last game of the 2009-10 season tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. at the War Memorial at Oncenter.
