Adirondack Phantoms News Release

GLENS FALLS, NY - Andres Nodl scored twice and rookie Shane Harper registered his first career professional goal, but Erik Condra's second goal of the night was the difference as the Binghamton Senators beat the Adirondack Phantoms 6-5 on Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Scoreless for much of the first period, the Senators struck first late in the frame as Jonathan Cheechoo stuffed home a rebound at 18:52 for a power play goal to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead.

The B-Sens opened up a 3-0 lead early in the second period with Connor Shields' first career AHL goal at 2:03 and then Erik Condra's first goal of the night at 3:37. Andreas Nodl sparked the Phantoms with an unassisted shorthanded goal on a breakaway at 8:13, beating rookie goalie Robin Lehner, who was making his pro debut. 13 seconds later Adirondack cut the lead to 3-2 when Jon Matsumoto scored another shorthanded goal, this time on a two-on-one rush at 8:26. The goal was Matsumoto's team-leading 30th of the season and was the first time all season that the Phantoms have scored two shorthanded goals in one game. Shields turned back the momentum with his second goal of the night at 14:23 to give Binghamton a 4-2 lead, but the home team would have the final strike of the period. Playing in just his fourth pro game, rookie Shane Harper took a pass from behind the net from Patrick Maroon and tapped in the puck at 19:47 for his first career pro goal, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Rookie defenseman Eric Gryba continued the trend of firsts in the game with his first career pro goal at 2:51 of the third period, putting Binghamton up 5-3. The critical goal of the evening came at 5:32, when Martin St. Pierre just barely kept the puck in the offensive zone at the blue line and then fired a shot toward the net, where Condra tipped it up over the shoulder of Stewart and into the roof of the cage to make it 6-3, the eventual game-winning goal. Nodl scored his second of the night at 7:43 to cut the lead to 6-4 and with just over a minute left in regulation rookie Erik Gustafsson scored his second goal of the year to extend his point streak to four games. But with Stewart on the bench for an extra attacker in the final minute, Adirondack could not come up with the late equalizer as they fell 6-5.

Rookie goalie Robin Lehner allowed five goals on 27 shots in professional debut, but picked up his first career pro victory as Binghamton improved to 35-34-6-3 on the season. Brian Stewart took the loss, while making 29 saves on 35 shots as Adirondack dropped to 32-40-3-4. The Senators out-shot the Phantoms 35-27 in the game and went 1-for-4 on the power play; Adirondack was 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.

Notes: University of North Dakota senior Darcy Zajac made his professional and AHL debut for the Phantoms in the game, finishing the night with one shot on goal and an even plus-minus rating. During the charity Guns N' Hoses game this afternoon the FDNY Hockey Team from New York City defeated the Adirondack Guns N' Hoses squad 12-4, but the event helped the 9-11 Memorial campaign reach it's fundraising goal to build the planned memorial at the Ridge Street Fire Station in downtown Glens Falls.

The Phantoms will close out the 2009-2010 season, presented by Bud Light, on Saturday, April 10th as they face the Albany River Rats at 7:00 pm for Round Twelve of the Time Warner Cable Cup series at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Saturday is Fan Appreciation Night with loads of special events and prizes for the fans.
