Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Spencer Machacek tallied two goals and Jayson Megna picked up a highlight reel wraparound, but it was the Providence Bruins who came out with a 4-3 shootout victory against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in front of a sold out crowd on Saturday night.
The point gained in the shootout allowed the Penguins (28-19-3-4, 63 points) to move into third place in the East Division standings, while the Bruins (29-18-1-6, 65 points) stretched their streak of consecutive games with a point to seven (6-0-0-1).
Megna started off the evening's offense with a fantastic individual effort. The Penguins forward grabbed picked up a blocked shot in his own zone, then motored up ice as the Bruins were making a line change. The swooped to the right of goaltender Niklas Svedberg, drawing him out of his crease, then tucked the puck inside the far post for his ninth AHL goal of the season at 17:21.
Craig Cunningham struck seven seconds into a Bruins power play early in the second period to tie the score, picking up his 20th goal of the season.
Machacek was the beneficiary of a wild bounce off of the end boards, as Svedberg had posted up behind his goal to stop a rimmed shot around the boards. The puck deflected out of the corner to Machacek in the slot, who had an empty net in front of him.
Alexander Khokhlachev knotted the game with 1:17 left in the period, driving the net and guiding a centering pass from Mike Moore over Jeff Deslauriers' left pad.
Machacek picked up his second of the night and fourth with the Penguins just 33 seconds into the third period, taking an Andrew Ebbett centering feed from behind the net and flicking home his 13th goal of the campaign.
Justin Florek forced overtime by wristing a shot off the inside of the left post from the high slot at 12:15 of the third.
The Bruins and Penguins finished the first three rounds of the shootout tied at two goals apiece before Ryan Spooner iced the game for the visitors, who travel to Bridgeport for a Sunday afternoon tilt.
The Penguins complete their four-game home stand on Tuesday evening when they host the Hershey Bears at 7:05pm. Good seats for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, online at TicketMaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
