Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Former Grand Rapids Griffins players Jonathan Ericsson (2006-09), Jonas Gustavsson (2012-13), Niklas Kronwall (2003-06) and Gustav Nyquist (2010-14) earned silver medals with Sweden at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, concluding the men's hockey tournament with Sunday's 3-0 loss to Canada in the gold medal game.

Kronwall became the first former Griffin to win a pair of Olympic medals, having won gold with Sweden at the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy. Today's result also completed the spectrum of medals for Griffins alumni, as Valtteri Filppula (2005-07) won bronze with Finland in 2010 in Vancouver.

The Griffins have a long and storied history with the Olympic Games. A record 11 Griffins alumni participated in this year's Games, including Slovakia's Tomas Jurco, who became one of five players in franchise history to skate in the Olympics while on Grand Rapids' active roster. In addition, 20 alumni have donned their nations' colors after concluding their Griffins careers.
