February 23, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Lewiston, ME- The St. John's IceCaps used five third-period goals to defeat the Pirates 6-5 Sunday afternoon.
John Albert scored twice and Tyler Beskorowany, making his first start for the IceCaps, made 31 saves to earn the win.
In the first, Tobias Rieder opened the scoring at 11:08 on the power play. David Rundblad spotted Rieder streaking through the middle and delivered a slap pass that Rieder redirected past Tyler Beskorowany to give the Pirates the lead. The IceCaps answered back at 18:58 with a power play goal of their own for Albert's first of the night.
In the second, the Pirates power play tallied again, this time with Brandon McMillan picking up the goal. Andy Miele was standing in the left circle when he spotted McMillan all alone by the right side of the net. Miele threaded a pass to McMillan who settled it and fired it past the sprawling Beskorowany to make it 2-1. Brandon Yip extended the lead at 17:33 when he scored his sixth goal of the year. Yip, who had been in the box for slashing, came out, was able to get the puck and broke into the IceCaps zone. Along the right wing boards, he threw a shot towards the net where it slipped past Beskorowany and gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead.
But the IceCaps turned up the intensity in the third, scoring five straight goals. Just 16 seconds into the final period, Albert scored his second goal of the night while shorthanded, followed by Blair Riley at 6:36 to tie the game up 3-3. Will O'Neill put a slap shot past Visentin on the power play at 8:44 to give the IceCaps the lead and Jerome Samson cashed in on a rebound at 10:35 to make it 5-3. Kael Mouillierat then made it 6-3 at 18:27.
The Pirates began to answer with Chris Brown scoring at 19:13, pulling them to within two. Then, with the goalie pulled, Rieder scored his second of the night off of a nice feed from Brandon Yip with just five seconds remaining. But it was too little, too late as the IceCaps held on to hand the Pirates the loss. The IceCaps have defeated the Pirates in 7 of their 8 matchups this season, and all 5 meetings at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
Andy Miele finished the game with three assists, placing him in 11th all-time on the Pirates assists list with 104, passing Mark Murphy, and giving him 159 career points, good enough for 10th all-time in Pirates history.
