Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Defenseman Dylan Reese scored a pair of power play goals for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, but it was the Providence Bruins prevailing in an eight-round shootout for a 3-2 win at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The game was deadlocked at two at the end of regulation and it was Wilkes-Barre/Scranton dominating the overtime period with a 4-0 shot advantage. Providence goaltender Niklas Svedberg repeatedly denied the Penguins offense in the extra session and would continue to do so in the shootout.
Svedberg and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goalie Brad Thiessen dueled back and forth in the shootout and kept the puck out of their nets for six full rounds. Chris Collins was the first convert with the backhand shot in the top half of round seven, but Justin Florek slipped the puck through Thiessen's pad to extend the shootout. After Svedberg stopped Adam Payerl, Christian Hanson squeezed a shot inside that far post to give Providence the victory.
The Penguins opened the scoring at 13:15 of the first period with a power play goal. Riley Holzapfel got the puck to the point for Reese, whose slapshot ricocheted off a Bruins defender and past Svedberg.
Providence was able to knot the score with 1:38 left in the same period when Bobby Robins got a stick on Florek's wrist shot and redirected it under the crossbar.
Reese struck again on the man-advantage to put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ahead, 2-1, at 15:01 of the second period. With two men in the penalty box for Providence, Reese found space in the high slot to accept a Trevor Smith pass and rocket it over the blocker of Svedberg.
The Bruins battled back to tie the game once again five minutes into the third as Hanson pounced on a loose puck in the Penguins' crease and punched it home.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins travel to battle the Norfolk Admirals on Tuesday, Apr. 2 at 7:15pm. Tune into 102.3 The Mountain or ahllive.com.
