Comeback Falls Short in 4-2 Loss to Barons

Down 3-0 at the start of the third period, the Peoria Rivermen scored twice to pull within one before they ultimately fell to the Oklahoma City Barons 4-2 at Carver Arena on Friday night. Brian Elliott, assigned to Peoria on a conditioning loan on Thursday, started in net for Peoria and allowed three goals on 27 shots in the loss.
While the Rivermen took the majority of shots on goal in the first period, the Barons jumped on the scoreboard first. Tanner House pushed the puck off Elliott's glove into the net to give Oklahoma City a 1-0 lead at 18:49. Curtis Hamilton assisted on the game's first goal.
In the second period, Peoria couldn't take advantage of a power play just 13 seconds into the frame. Afterwards, the Barons extended their lead. Anton Lander passed the puck to Toni Rajala for a breakaway. Rajala pump-faked a slap shot and deked past Elliott for a goal at 3:36. Kendall McFaull also assisted on the play.
Just more than 2:05 later, Mark Arcobello scored his team-leading 20th goal of the season on a power play. Josh Green was credited with an assist on the goal as Arcobello snapped a shot into the back of the net from between the circles to give the Barons a 3-0 lead.
Facing a three goal deficit, the Rivermen scored early in the third period to cut the lead. From below the right circle, Tyler Shattock scored his fourth goal of the year past Yann Danis at 3:25. Brett Sonne assisted on the Rivermen first goal.
Later in the third, Andrew Murray pushed the puck up the ice. T.J. Hensick outskated Oklahoma City's defense and wristed a shot off the top shelf of the net for his 17th score of the season. David Shields also assisted on the goal at 12:20 that cut the Barons' lead to 3-2.
Peoria had an opportunity with less than 5 minutes in the game on a power play against Oklahoma City's penalty kill unit, which ranks worst in the league. However, the Rivermen were unable to push the puck past Danis.
The Barons added an empty-net goal at 19:36 to extend their lead to 4-2. Brandon Davidson scored his first goal of the year unassisted.
The Rivermen went 0-for-5 on the powerplay, while Oklahoma City was 1-for-3. The Barons outshot Peoria 30-27.
