
Portland Pirates Team Award Voting Now Underway

Portland, Maine - The Portland Pirates announced today that fan voting for the 2012-13 Team Awards, presented by Creative Awards is now underway. Pirates' fans will have the opportunity to choose the Pirates' Unsung Hero, Most Popular Player, and Most Valuable Player, presented by Maine Medical Center. All three awards will be presented following the Pirates game against the Hershey Bears on April 14th.
The Unsung Hero Award is determined by a fan vote and is given to the Pirates player who surpassed expectations to become a vital part of the team. Last year's winner was Tyler Ekford, with past winners also including Pirates Hall of Famers Steve Poapst (twice), Kent Hulst, and Brad Church.
The Most Popular Player Award is awarded to the player that fans view as the Pirates' most well know player. Last year's recipient was Ryan Hollweg, with Pirates Hall of Famers Jason Christie (twice), and Kevin Kaminski also receiving the award during their playing careers. Pirates legend Mel Angelstad twice won the award as well.
The Pirates' Most Valuable Player Award, presented by Maine Medical Center is determined by fan vote and is given to the player deemed the most valuable by the Pirates faithful. Pirates forward Andy Miele received the award last year, joining Pirates Hall of Famers Jeff Nelson, Martin Brochu (twice) and Andrew Brunette as recipients of this prestigious award.
Fans will have the opportunity to vote in person at tonight's game against the Manchester Monarchs, as well as online at portlandpirates.com/teamawardvoting. Fans can also turn in paper ballots to the Pirates office during normal business hours. Paper ballots are available at tonight's game or at the Pirates office. Team Award voting ends on April 5th, with the award ceremony to take place on April 14th following the Pirates game against the Hershey Bears.
