Broncos Erase Three-Goal Deficit But Fall Late to Tigers
January 20, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current's never give up attitude was in full effect as they erased a 3-0 deficit to draw even against Medicine Hat but the Tigers' Trevor Longo scored the decisive goal with 52.6 seconds left in the third period to send the Broncos to a 5-3 loss on Saturday night.
Medicine Hat got off to fast start as rookie Nick McCarry scored 2:37 in from the opening faceoff to record the first goal of the game and his first career WHL goal.
Then it was Dylan MacPherson making it 2-0 Tigers as the blue liner turned up the jets, entered the zone down the left wing and fired a shot on goal that Broncos goaltender Isaac Poulter got a piece of but not enough as MacPherson tapped in his own rebound.
The Tigers went up 3-0 as Brett Kemp registered his 25th goal of the season and that was the score through 20 minutes despite the shots on goal being 12 apiece.
Tempers flared as the Broncos Matt Stanley and the Tigers Cole Clayton dropped the mitts with 6:15 left in the second period, leading to five minute majors going out to both players.
The spark was a major turning point for Swift Current as 2000-born forward Owen Blocker got the Broncos on the board to make it a 3-1 game. Blocker released a good hard low shot moments after entering the Tigers zone from the right wing to earn his second marker of the year.
Swift Current's third period presence was certainly on full display as Ethan O'Rourke capped off a beautiful tic-tac-toe play that included Tyler Smithies and Ian Briscoe to put the Broncos down only a single goal. O'Rourke's goal marked his second in as many nights.
The Broncos power play went to work as defenceman Connor Horning unleashed a one-timer from the top of the point to tie the game up 3-3. Billy Sowa delivered the pass while Briscoe earned his second helper of the night.
It stayed tied until the final moments of regulation when the Tigers Longo unloaded a one-timer by the Broncos Poulter to give Medicine Hat a one goal cushion at 4-3.
Tigers captain James Hamblin netted an empty net goal to put it out of reach for the Broncos.
Shots on goal were 44-26 in favour of Medicine Hat. The Broncos scored on their single power play opportunity while the Tigers finished 0/4 on their man advantages.
Next on the schedule for the Broncos is another home-and-home set, this time vs. the Saskatoon Blades with the first date to occur on Friday, January 25th at the Innovation Credit Union I-Plex. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm CT.
