Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Kelowna, BC - The Prince Albert Raiders (39-5-0-2) picked up a point, but fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Kelowna Rockets (19-22-3-1) at Prospera Place on Saturday night.
Kelowna's Nolan Foote scored the only goal in the shootout and had a goal and two assists in regulation. Dante Hannoun, Parker Kelly, and Spencer Moe all had a multi-point game for the Raiders.
The Raiders got on the board first at the 4:51 mark of the period. Brayden Pachal's shot was stopped by Roman Basran. Brett Leason got a stick on it, but the puck fell to Aliaksei Protas at the top of the crease. The Belarusian rookie banged home the rebound for his ninth goal of the year. The play was reviewed, but the call on the ice was upheld.
The Rockets responded with 7:24 to play in the opening period. Kyle Topping fought his way to the front of the net and chipped a puck over and through Ian Scott to level the score at 1-1.
About four minutes later, Kelowna took the lead. Just before receiving a hit from Pachal, Foote let go of a wrist shot that beat Scott with 3:57 to play in the period to put the Rockets up 2-1 after 20 minutes.
Early in the second, the Raiders tied it up. Moe fanned on his initial pass, regrouped and fired a puck across the zone. Hannoun skated towards the puck, collected it, and ripped a shot past Basran to make it a 2-2 game with his 22nd of the year.
Ozzy Wiesblatt had a great chance to break the tie on the power play early in the third. With Basran down, the puck found Wiesblatt at the side of the goal. The rookie put a shot on goal, but the Rockets netminder was able to get in front of the puck to keep the game knotted up at 2-2.
At the 7:52 mark of the third, the Raiders restored their lead. Moe found Kelly with a great cross-ice pass and the Ottawa Senators prospect roofed a shot over Basran for his 22nd of the season.
Late in the third, the Rockets tied the game on a four-on-three power play. Lassi Thomson walked the line and his blast from the point got past two Raiders trying to block the shot and into the back of the net with 5:09 to play to force overtime.
In the extra frame, both teams had chances to end the game. With less than 30 seconds to play, Scott made the sure the game got to a shootout. He first stopped Thomson who was cutting to the net. The rebound found an open Michael Farren in the slot, but Scott stacked the pads to deny the former Saskatoon Blade.
In the shootout, Scott stopped Topping and Leif Mattson in the first and third round respectively, but Foote beat the Toronto Maple Leafs goaltending prospect in the second.
Hannoun, Leason, and Noah Gregor were chosen for the shootout for the Raiders, but none were able get a puck past Basran to give the Rockets the 4-3 win.
To go along with stopping two of three shooters in the shootout, Scott made 27 saves in the loss. Basran stopped 30 shots before blanking the Raiders in the shootout.
The Raiders are back in action on Tuesday night in Victoria when they take on the Royals (22-19-1-0) at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. Puck drop is 9:05 p.m. Catch the game at The Rock And Iron Sports Bar at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club or listen on 900 CKBI.
