Brito Goes Deep in LumberKings Win Over Matt Garza

CLINTON, IA- The Clinton LumberKings registered 11 hits, a new season high, in a 5-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday night at Ashford University Field. Kristian Brito homered in a three-run fourth inning that sunk the Timber Rattlers (5-6) and gave Matt Garza the loss.

Wisconsin got on the board first. LumberKings starter Ljay Newsome allowed an unearned run to score in the top of the third inning. Ryan Aguilar began the rally with a single and moved to second on a fielding error by Gareth Morgan in left field. A ground out and a sacrifice fly later scored Aguilar for the first run of the game.

The LumberKings answered in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at one on a two-out RBI single by Bryson Brigman.

Garza (0-1), a Major League pitcher rehabbing for the Milwaukee Brewers, started for Wisconsin and after keeping the LumberKings scoreless through the first two innings, allowed single runs in the third, fifth, and three runs in the fourth.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Timber Rattlers took their second lead of the night when Joantegel Segovia singled and was followed by a Jose Cuas RBI double to right.

Again, the LumberKings answered right back. Kristian Brito led-off the bottom of the fourth with a towering home run to left that tied the game at two. Johmbeyker Morales followed with a single and scored when the next batter Rayder Ascanio doubled to right. Ascanio moved to third on a ground out and scored the third run of the inning on a Garza wild pitch.

Brito went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double, run scored, and two RBI. In the bottom of the fifth, Brito added to the LumberKings lead with an RBI double that scored Brigman.

Newsome (2-1) protected the lead his offense gave him by going six innings, striking out six, walking none, and scattering seven hits. He turned in the second quality start of the season by a LumberKings pitcher.

Jack Anderson came on in relief to start the seventh and worked 1-2-3 in his first inning of work. In the eighth, the Timber Rattler pushed a run across when Tucker Neuhaus doubled home a run with two out in the inning. Anderson earned his first hold of the season when got the next man to ground out to end the eighth.

Marvin Gorgas made his fourth appearance of the year for Clinton in the ninth and was just one pitch away from ending the game when Cuas slugged solo homer to left to make it a one-run game. Gorgas rebounded to get the next man to ground out to end the game, earning his second save of the season.

The LumberKings will play game two of the three-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday. LHP Danny Garcia (1-1, 0.00) will get the start for Clinton and face Wisconsin's RHP Victor Diaz (0-2, 2.25). First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 12:45 PM, Erik Oas will be on the call. Tuesday will be sweet and salty day at Ashford University Field with 50 cent popcorn and cotton candy all game long.
